A Grecian Vacation emersed in History

We recently spent our summer holidays in both Santorini and Crete, Greece this year. Going to Santorini has been a long-time dream of mine, wanting to see those amazing blue depth in colours of sea & sky, against a bright yellow sun on the white backdrops of the houses, caves and churches.  We were craving homemade, wholesome, yummy Greek food too, encouraging our kids to eat only from this cuisine too. The people and travelers we met were awesome, extremely friendly and generous of their time, products, hospitality and gifts.

The highlight of our first day in Santorini was spent in Oia, meeting up with my friend Angie and her husband Frank from home.  We grew up together in Melbourne, went to school and even celebrated their wedding. The last time I remember seeing them was when their daughter was born, 23 years ago. Overwhelmed with emotions of happiness and joy, we reminisced and caught up as though we'd seen each other yesterday. They met my family for the first time too.  This definitely had to be one of the best things about this trip.

Exploring Santorini's gems in a short space of time was a challenge - Oia and the caves, the Capital Fira, seeing the Caldera. Absorbing the vibrant colours of the Red Beach, seeing Akrotiri the prehistoric Minoan civilisation site, Perissa Black beach near Ancient Thera, as well as Pyrgos, the gorgeous town on the hill with views of distant seas, hills and olive groves.

The boat ride to Heraklion Crete was almost too hilarious.  The Sea Jet arrives late, people from all walks of life in very different classes rush on like cattle, scram up to the decks and lounges within 10 minutes, and the boat is off again.   Unloading the passengers was just as funny.

We stayed at a house just outside Heraklion near Episkopi, we commenced our expedition for the best Cretan & Greek cuisine, the most gorgeous beaches and adventures.  Potamos Beach near Malia, Elafonisi with its pink sands on the South-western side on Chania's side, Voulisma beach near Agios Nikolaos and Vai Palm-Tree Beach to the far east, past Sitia.   We visited the prehistoric findings of Knossos Minoan Palace, seeing other sites near Malia and the Heraklion Museum.    Crete has so many gems to see and enjoy.

Feels like forever ago now, the suntan is already fading and the kids are getting ready to go back to school tomorrow.  Thank goodness ... I will have some peace and quiet again!!!  Lili x

Olive Oil is abundant in Greece

Everywhere in Greece are the Olive Trees, in abundance, soaking up the sun, the sea air, being invaded by the grasshoppers from the moment the sunrises.  At Peskesi we had our best eating experience whilst based in Crete, together with a lesson about different kinds of Cretan olive oils. Understanding the aroma, flavour and strengths before warming the jar in our hands, inhaling the scent and drinking the 2 differnt selections was a lovely experience.  So what's so great about Olive Oil, a key ingredient to Mediterranean cooking and diet?

For thousands of years, Olive trees have been an important part of ancient civilisations, and many of the longest living people have included it in their daily diet.  Very high-quality extra virgin olive oil has anti-inflammatory compounds, a variety of macro-nutrients that keep a healthy heart and antioxidants.   Naturally high in healthy fatty acids, olive oil is made from the fruit of the olive tree. There are several different kinds are Extra Virgin, Virgin and regular olive oil. Though be aware that many which are laced with GMO Canola oil and herbal flavours, or are watered down with other oils thanks for Mafia corruption interferring with the production process, believe it or not! Some of the benefits of using Extra Virgin Olive Oil:

  • It contains monounsaturated fatty acids and oleic acid which helps keep a healthy heart whilst fighting off free-radicals;
  • It can help with weight loss whilst preventing obesity;
  • It supports the health of the brain, helping to improve memory and focus;
  • It contains secoiridoids which is a kind of antioxidant that helps stimulate gene signatures that assists anti-aging and reduces stress on the cells.

Warnings just make sure you don't apply high temperatures when cooking Extra Virgin Olive Oil.  Be sure to check the quality of your Olive Oil and use it for salads instead of cooking it, or apply after the cooking for the wonderful taste.   There are alternative oils for cooking, like Coconut, Avocado and Ghee.  Store in a dark coloured jar or tin away from direct sunlight.  Anything in clear plastic bottles will more than likely contain fillers that may make the oil turn rancid quicker, counteracting the benefits it's meant to bring you.

This pic was taken from our place in Santorini, overlooking the Sea, the Ships and the Caldera.

Rehydrating after being in the sun makes all the differnce for your skin.  I noticed if I didn't moisturise my face in the morning, the sunblock felt a little rough on my skin. In the evening, I removed it with the Sunflower Cleanser which felt wonderful.  Then applied the Nourishing Face Balm and Mint Body Butter on my tanned skin to maintain the glow and colour.   The kids were applying the Natural Baby Moisturising Oil after their showers, whilst my husband had his Hydrating Face Balm with Sandalwod to keep his skin young looking!

Other days I used the Diamond Era Serum... I'm new to this having recently turned 50.  I love how my skin absorbs it and feels lovely, fresh and hydrated with 1-2 drops.  And Peppermint Feet kept my heels looking soft whilst wearing open shoes!
