Following on from the last blog about ‘Taking Time out’. Whilst recently being in Hospital recovering from the Hernia Operation, I had plenty of time to think, rest, and study again. I don’t really have a high pain threshold which made my recovery seem to take longer than planned.

I remember waking up and feeling groggy and hearing numbers being called out in German. They were calling out my low blood pressure numbers, but I was too late to tell the staff it was normal for me!! They had already given me a shot of morphine!! The other painkillers were being fed by drip – gosh for someone who rarely takes even Ibuprofen for the occasional headache, this was mega.

Unable to move around, or change my positions freely, I felt quite restricted despite being in good spirits. You don’t even realise how much you need your stomach or core muscles until you are unable to use them. Coughing, laughing, and sneezing was so difficult to do whilst I was bandaged and recovering. I’m glad to say that 2 weeks post-operation, I seem to be back to normal, except I am not able to lift heavy items for a few more weeks. My kids are so happy as they look for any excuses not to help around anymore!! That’s so Not cool.

With the excuse that I couldn’t do much, I took the time complete my Reflexology case studies and submit my final exam. It was one of those courses that needed a lot of motivation to study, write, and understand. I’m glad that I persevered and completed it.I’m happy to say that I received my Reflexology Diploma with Distinction to add to the other 5 completed courses.

Choosing my Diplomas in Aromatherapy, Clinical Nutrition, Stress Management, Holistic Skincare Products, and Reflexology were so I could assist with a holistic approach to well-being when trying to help my customers. The one currently being studied is Holistic Pain Management. There is so much to grasp – not only how the Mind, Body and Spirit work together, but how there are so many alternative health solutions too. It’s ironic that whilst I was in so much pain and discomfort, I had to commence studying this subject.I look forward to helping my customers with alternative solutions instead of seeking drugs as the only option.

In my youth when I was unwell, I had the pleasure of trying all sorts of alternative options. I tried the Herbalist, Chinese Medicine person with the brutal massage techniques and suction cups, the Reflexology, the Acupuncturist as well as the Dermatologist. I believe all of these experiences helped me comprehend what they do and how they can assist in bringing about well-being.Sometimes we should try another avenue to see if it works for us.These other options helped me so much in my quest to find my own well-being, irrespective of whether or not they worked for me.It’s only when you have boiled and drank a cup full of ‘secret herbs and barks’ from the Chinese Medicine person that you will ever understand the benefits and the hideous tastes at the same time!

My tummy was so bloated from the medication that I stopped taking them altogether.Imagine what happens to your intestinal tract if you’re taking medications all the time? My elderly Italian neighbour gave me some dry figs and other fruits to help me.

What also helped was increasing my water and herbal tea intake. I took Aloe Vera cleanser as well as make a Himalayan Sea Salt Water wash to drink. I tried not to use medicated options for helping my tummy as I wanted my Intestinal tract to flush out any build-up or irritations caused by the medications as quickly as possible. This also helps keep your skin healthy and clear.

Then I taught my husband how to make an Italian Minestrone so that I could eat well without having to feel so ill. The recipe is below:

MINESTRONE: Cut all sorts of veggies into chunks including Onion, carrots, cabbage, celery, mushrooms, spinach, long green beans cut smaller, potatoes for thickening the soup. You can also add peas and silver beat (or Swiss Chard). Salt, pepper, Italian Herbs, veggie stock and cover them with water.Then add a can of chopped up tomatoes, season to taste again.   Add a little sugar to remove the acidity of the tomatoes. Cook until soft, squash the potatoes down to thicken and eat!

For assisting the healing of my wounds, I mentioned in the last blog the benefits of Grapeseed Oil (Vitis vinifera) which comes from the seeds of grapes, a by-product of making wine.It contains Omega-3 fatty acids with the highest levels of Omega-6 Fatty Acids, compared to other Vegetable Oils. I made sure I had my Essentially Lili Products with me in hospital and at home.

The one I have been applying to my wounds is Mint Body Butter whilst others have been using the to prevent any scarring post-operation. I look forward to hearing the progress updates from the other operation buddies.

Taking Time Out – Allows you to chillax, Relax & be kind to yourself, whilst recovering, in order to get your health back on track.

I recently wrote about our wonderfully fun travels in Italy … we love going there and enjoying everything it has to offer. Great food, wonderful beaches, fun people and other adventurers making their way to Italy. What I dreaded the most was the consequences of my indulgent eating habits catching up to me.

And it did catch up, in a number of way. First with my weight, piling on a few too many kilos that made me feel uncomfortable and self-conscious.I would wear baggy clothes just to hide some of it.

It also irritated my skin, as the build-up of dairy products in my system eventually comes out on my hands. They were irritated, swollen, cracked, itchy and bleeding.Has this happened to you?

I can never know how long it will take for my body to rid itself of the build-up of lactose in my system.
But one thing it needs is time, persistence and patience. The irritations began in August and are still not 100% in October. That’s nearly 3 months of discipline. This just goes to show that there is never a quick overnight solution to long-term problems. Whilst I apply my products continuously throughout the day, the main factor that helps me resolve it is controlling my diet. I must ensure that it’s dairy-free to prevent Eczema become part of my life. Don’t get me wrong – I do enjoy some dairy products, I just should not eat them as they are not good for me and my body if I want to remain Eczema Free.

In June, I weighed myself and was not happy with what the scales showed.Since returning from holidays in August, I cut back without totally eliminating carbs from my diet. I removed the dairy products which I’m intolerant to anyways, in order to allow my body the time needed to heal and get my hands sorted out again. I asked my family to help out too, with tasks like washing up, as even hot water can cause my skin to become irritated. It’s so frustrating and yet time, persistence and patience is needed for me to get the results I want.

Today I am less bloated from changing what foods I have been eating. When weighing myself recently, I have lost 5.4 kilos which have allowed me to move down a notch on my belt. I am really pleased considering this is happened without doing gym-type exercise. I still have a while to go to reach and remain in my ideal weight bracket.

The other thing is taking the advice from those that are older than us. Our 89-year-old neighbour recently passed away, leaving behind his wife of 61 years of marriage and 2 daughters. The years he suffered being unwell meant he spent a lot of time going back and forth between the hospital, the elderly people’s home, and his own place.It caused a lot of anguish and stress for his wife, never knowing if he would be well enough to just stay home without any need for assistance.
We talked about his health and the advice she gave me was, ‘Don’t leave things unfixed or too late if they need to be resolved. Get them sorted out whilst you can.’ So it’s time for me to finally go and get myself sorted and take time out.

Diastasis Recti, an umbilical hernia is when your intestine or other tissues inside your abdominal cavity bulge through the weak spot around the belly button, leading to an alien-looking “outie” belly button.In addition to protruding outward, the belly button area may also become swollen and a bit painful.

My hernia pops out like an alien hand especially if I have eaten too much.It was bothering me for a while now, and this year I have decided to get it sorted out. On the 24th of October, I’ll be having this operation, removing that little alien and whatever else shouldn’t be there, whilst having the split muscle meshed back in.It will mean resting up for 10 days as I will be unable to lift or put too much emphasis on my core muscles. I could risk damaging the operation repair and having the muscle tear again.I will be able to just chillax, relax and allow my family here take care of me for a change. Though the downside is having to put all production of new products on hold for a while.

About the Diastasis Recti – which ironically can also be caused by doing lots of core exercises!
The most common can develop during the 2nd trimester, peak during the 3rd and remain after delivery. During the pregnancy, the hormones such as relaxin are released which can weaken the tissues of the abs. Whilst the belly is growing, the ab muscles are thinned and stretched, adding pressure to the whole abdominal region. Months after the birth of the child, the abdominal muscles can naturally come together with a little, improving any Diastasis Recti, though it’s not always totally resolved. It’s even more common for those giving birth to twins or having multiple pregnancies where the initial hernia was already existing.

Diastasis Recti isn’t a serious condition, nor particularly dangerous, but it makes sense to treat it before it gets bigger. It could lead to postural problems and other symptoms if left too long. Speak with your Doctor, Gynaecologist, or physical therapist especially if you have pain and discomfort in your abdominal area or back. Always get medical help if you see other signs of a hernia, have severe gastrointestinal issues, notice swelling around your abs that lasts more than several days. You should visit your primary doctor or even a general surgeon to have a CT scan if you have a true concern about having a hernia, since this may require medical intervention.

Other factors for hernias include:
• Being Obese or gaining weight, especially around the belly area;
• Being over the age of 35;
• Having injuries. trauma or surgery to the abdominal area;
• Repetitive core exercises such as Pilates and stomach crunches could increase your risk;
• Exercises and sports that require you to arch your back and twist from side to side can also increase your risk. These include sports like Tennis, Golf, Gymnastics, Yoga, Biking, Weight-lifting and even swimming.
• Injecting the abdominal area with steroids can cause the muscles to weaken.
Who would have thought that being naturally flexible can cause the connective tissues to stretch and thin out?

Gallery: Diastasis Recti Hernia, Hands Body Lips Products, Time out., Post Operation, Grapes.

Other natural ways of preventing a hernia:
1. Do some physical therapy;
2. Make sure your exercises are specific for strengthening the core without further damaging the area;
3. Try to prevent adding abdominal pressure to the area – lifting, carrying;
4. Keeping a healthy weight; and
5. Treating hernias before they become bigger.

As mentioned in the latest newsletter, the benefits of Grapeseed Oil for scarring is amazing.In case you missed the newsletter. Grapeseed Oil (Vitis vinifera) comes from the seeds of grapes, a by-product of making wine.It contains Omega-3 fatty acids with the highest levels of Omega-6 Fatty Acids, compared to other Vegetable Oils.Some of the benefits of Grapeseed Oil include:* It is an emollient that is rich in Vitamins C, D and E, making it great for reducing wrinkles, stretch marks, and scars;* It helps tighten the skin.
* It plays a protective role in the body as the oil contains linoleic acid which converts to GLA (gamma-linoleic acid) in the body.
* It contains no trans fat.
* Grapeseed Oil has an ideal thickness for cosmetic products.
* Grapeseed Oil helps treat acne with the polyphenols and antioxidants contained within.
* It works well as an able moisturiser, helping to balance out both dry and oily patches on the skin.
* If used as a toner, the Grapeseed Oil can not only cleanse the skin but penetrate the pores to resolve breakouts.
* It’s a great oil to use for a Massage therapy as it is absorbed by the skin well.
* For those seeking a moisturising & conditioning oil for their hair, Grapeseed Oil is lighter than both Olive & Coconut, and doesn’t leave the hair feeling greasy.It can also help reduce dandruff and hair loss, strengthening the hair, allowing it to grow faster.

Essentially Lili Products containing Grapeseed Oil include:
* Mint Body Butter is my husband’s favourite.
* Jazz Body Butter – containing Lemongrass and Jasmine, which is one of my favourites.
* Sun Kissed Balm – for Sunspots & Discolouration, rich in Vitamins contained in Grapeseed Oil.
* Sunflower Cleanser – For those of you suffering with Acne, cleansing is key to removing excess from your pores and keeping it hydrated helps it from drying out.
* Rosey Hemp Hands – keeping hands soft during the winters.Recently used on my customer’s Dog Paws too! 🙂 This product is currently on offer as there are a few left.
* Go Molly -to help repair the skin and treat Molluscum / Flying Warts.
* Pox Potion – rich in vitamins to help get rid of any scars caused by Chicken Pox.This is made fresh upon request.

I will ensure my jars of Mint Body Butter or Jazz Body Butter are applied to the area to prevent any scarring post-operation.

So for the time being, I will continue my quest to help my body from within with my new eating habits. And I will get my Umbilical Hernia sorted out on the 24th of October.My plan is to be offline whilst I recuperate. Though knowing me, I will still post on Instagram & Facebook to keep in touch.If you need anything, please order your products before the 22nd of October so that I can send them out on the 23rd. I hope you understand this need for Taking Time Out for me.

How Perseverance Is Key to Getting Your Glow, Confidence & Wellness back

What I love to do is to share my personal About Me story with with those who ask about the Essentially Lili All-Natural Skincare products. The reason I started making the Range and sharing the products with others IS because of my personal journey. The battle I had with Eczema as a Kid and Teenager and into adulthood, combined with the various types of medications I was given made my whole body a mess from inside-out.

The frustration of looking at myself in the mirror, being covered in red blotches, patches, bleeding scratches that were also weeping clear liquid was beyond painful and awful.  It made me feel self-conscious, hideous, lacking confidence and extremely isolated.

At 19, when my journey to wellness began, I remember being in a very dark and lonely space, away from everyone outside.   I only left the house to see my Naturopath who helped me get out of this medically created mess.  My skin was the worst he had ever seen. To make me feel more disheartened was getting worse at the beginning when I started my detoxification process.  However, the anguish I was going through was enough to keep me persevering, following his instructions with determination to get the results I desperately wanted.

How many of you have been ill or felt yuk and all you wanted to do was hide away from the world?

I know what it’s like.  I didn’t go anywhere in my state.  This was happening during my 3rd year of University and so I just stopped attending everything for 2 months – lectures, tutorials and social events.  I returned to sit my exams though it was no surprise I failed some that semester. I had to do an extra year of University, graduating the following year with my Bachelor of Business (Accounting) Degree.

Sometimes in life, things just go from bad to worse. They make us feel frustrated, angry, stressed out, anxious and willing to chuck in the towel.  But what if you took a different approach?  What if you just took some time out, to reflect, to write down what’s bothering you, change your strategy and do something different.  What if the results you are looking for are right in front of you?

For me, I took one month of totally detoxing my body, changing what and how I ate to bring the results I needed. It was not an easy path, but I persisted, persevered and was patient with my body’s recovery.

When I ask Customers to keep an eye on what they’re eating, wearing, touching and if their environment has changed, it’s not because I want to criticise or judge you. It may be that these factors are triggering the reactions in your body. They could be the reason for the breakouts in your skin, giving you cramps, headaches or causing you to feel irritable and cranky. By changing something, we can help speed up the process of getting well again and preventing those issues reoccurring on a frequent basis.

I really want to encourage you that Perseverance, Persistence and Patience are Key to getting your glow, your confidence and your Mojo back.  We would all love to have the overnight success, though it doesn’t always happen. Can you imagine if we only needed to go to the gym once to have an awesome Shaun T BeachBody Six Pack?   Can you imagine if you went on a diet and the next day could fit into size 8?   We can all dream of those moments, but the reality is that a lot of time, effort and persistence went into achieving these goals.

A quick summary for Getting Your Glow:
* Do not cleanse in the mornings as you could remove any new cells that were generated whilst you were getting your beauty sleep!
* Cleansing only at night time to remove any dirt and pollution from your skin.
* Some Serums & Balms contain Essential Oils that will make your skin sensitive to the sun.These should only be applied at night time.
* Applying a little of the balms as often as needed helps prevent your skin from drying out and cracking.
* Depending on the age of the child, sometimes we need to be clever and apply products on their nearby toys.
* Don’t be afraid to get rid of products that contain parabens & other nasty ingredients, no matter how much they cost.
* I recently cleared a Beauty Case full of Expensive well-known brands worth a lot of money, many of which were new & unused.I also threw out all my emergency stashes of Cortisone that were always in my drawers – just in case.
* In all things, apply common sense – drink water, wear sun hats, sun block, if something doesn’t agree with you, stop eating /drinking it, and find an alternative!
* Perseverance, Persistence & Patience are the Key to get your Glow, your confidence, your health, that job and the success you’re after.

I want to encourage you to NOT GIVE UP in your pursuits.   I too had many moments when I wanted to chuck in the towel with frustration. But instead, I want to inspire you to keep striving, persisting, pushing, reaching, changing, pursuing and wanting to go ahead.I have been encouraged by others to be myself and with that, I say the same to you:   Be patience, be kind to yourself, be genuine with those you deal with, love what you do, be honest but not a pushover and let those around you help (if they can).  And if at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again!

The 7th of April marks the 3rd birthday & anniversary of when Essentially Lili took a plunge to make sample products and distribute them at a Women’s Breakfast in Zurich.Some of you have had the most amazing results with the Essentially Lili ProductsI love making these Fresh, with Love, without any fake ingredients, all Vegan/Vegetarian and suitable for many ages.

Your feedback allows me to improve & sometimes re-tweak the ratio of ingredients or the application of the products, especially when it comes to Kids. Your Reviews are the best way to celebrate your success with the products you have chosen. It helps others feel encouraged by your journey and assists them to choose what they need for themselves and loved ones.

What’s In Your Fridge?

What’s In Your Fridge?

Contains many All-Natural Goodies
which benefit & assist your body & skin!

Have you ever thought of opening your fridge to have fun with what’s in there?
We often just associate the fridge with foods and drinks for consumption, but not for the other benefits they may contain.

When my sister and I were in our teens, we used to wait for our parents to leave the house for a few hours before raiding the fridge! Out came the yoghurt, eggs, lemons and more as we experimented with hair treatments, colouring, face masks and girly things. We had some hilarious incidents during these sessions, though often the clean-up was more challenging than the task we were trying to reach.

During my Holistic Skincare Product making Diploma course, we learned about the kinds of ingredients that are contained in Commercial products compared to what we put in our Naturally made products. I have chosen to only use Naturally sourced ingredients as it goes with our Brand, Integrity and stays true to the About Me Story.

A while ago I wrote to my Facebook friends what they could do for a quick remedial way of treating their skin.  I shared this because often we think that we should spend loads of money on expensive Masks and Treatments, which often contain a combination of synthetic chemically made nasties that do more damage than good.  I often say to my customers, if you can read the ingredients without needing a Dictionary, then you’re on the right track!

Typical ingredients found in Commercially bought Masks include: Aqua (Water), Cetearyl alcohol, Glycerin, Kaolin, Magnesium aluminum silicate, Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Rosa damascena flower water, Cera alba (Beeswax), Polysorbate 60, Sorbitan stearate, Urea, Phenoxyethanol, Ceteareth-20, Xanthan gum, Pelargoneum graveolens (Geranium) oil, Parfum (Fragrance), Allantoin, Tocopheryl acetate, Benzoic acid, Althaea officinalis root extract, Dehydroacetic acid, Disodium EDTA, Ethylhexylglycerin, Mannan, Salix alba (White willow) bark extract, Citric acid, Polyaminopropyl biguanide, Potassium sorbate, Sodium benzoate, Citronellol, Coumarin, Eugenol, Geraniol, Butylphenyl methylpropional, Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Dipropylene glycol.

To be safe, just check the ingredients of the products you’re using, especially if you have sensitive skin and are prone to breaking out in red blotches or spots.

To end the year with something fun, here are some tips on taking care of your skin with what’s in your fridge.  Remember to wash your face with warm water before and after applying a face mask as this will help keep your skin clean and allows valuable nutrients to penetrate!

Let’s start with these:

Apple, Grapefruit, Honey, Lemon are all great for adding to your Mask.
Apricot – Fresh or dried is rich in Vitamin A.
Avocado – flesh of the fruit has high oil content, as well as lecithin, Vitamins A and B.
Avocado butter has Vitamins A, B, G and E.
Banana – Rich in Vitamin A, great to mash and put on your face.
Blackberry – use the fruit to make a mask, the leaves in a toner can help refine the pores.
Carrot – Rich in Vitamin A, use the juice with your face mask.
Cucumber – very similar pH to the skin, is soothing, cooling and healing. Use the juice in your face mask and slices on your eyes whilst relaxing;
Eggs – Use the Yolk to make a mask for dry skin and the whites to make it set!
Mayonnaise – the vinegar helps restore the acid balance of the skin whilst the oil is softening and moisturising.  I have found for me, products with Vinegar irritates my sensitive skin, so be careful if yours is the same.
Melon – added to face mask for cooling effect.
Oatmeal – is great added to masks!
Peach – the whole fruit can be used in a face mask.
Strawberries & Tomatoes both have astringent action on the skin, which is great for face mask.
Wheatgerm – Rich in Vitamin A, B and E, used dried for masks.
Yoghurt – Good for removing blackheads, great on your face.

Some other great ingredients for using in masks are: Green Clay, Kaolin Clay, Kelp, Pink Clay and Rhassoul Mud. The benefits of these ingredients is that they draw the impurities from the skin, they are rich in minerals, and are able to deep cleanse the face, body and hair during the mask cleansing process.

We will begin supplying Pink Clay in 2018 as part of our Essentially Lili Range.

Gallery: Fresh Ingredients, Bananas & Oats, Strawberries, Cucumber & Yoghurt, Avocados, Aloe Vera & Pink Clay.
