Therapeutic Benefit of Roses

A Gorgeous Fragrant Flower, Wonderful in Aiding
Beauty, Wellness & Health.

QR BLOG APR2023

As mentioned in the April 2023 Newsletter, this time of the year finds the streets of Zürich covered in white & pink Cherry Blossoms & Magnolia buds.   The fountains in the old town are also filled with roses from the 1st to the 10th of April.  It started as an initiative by the Churches of Zürich to ‘spread peace & hope to all’, where all the thorns are removed from the variety of rose buds which are placed in the water.

Historically, Rose oil was regarded exotic due to its unique elegance & fragrance.  It was quickly appreciated & grown by early civilizations as far back as 5000 years ago.  During ancient times, the Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, Indians, Persians and Romans included the use of rose essential oil for medicinal purposes, which are identical to how it’s being used today.

Steam distillation was the process started by the Persians, which allowed the extracted oil to be used for treating scars as it is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, astringent and allows cells to rejuvenate.   The remaining rose water was utilised as a method for giving scent to their bodies.   Rose oil extracted by distillation from various types of petals occurs still today, and is commonly used in aromatherapy.   The oil is rich in Citronellol, it can be sedative, relieve stress, encompassing anti-depressive qualities in its aroma.

From the Middle Ages, rose oil extracted has been the base element in cosmetics and perfumery all over the world.  Bulgaria ‘Rose Valley’ is the world’s number one producer & global exporter of rose oil, followed closely by Turkey and Morocco.  In Bulgaria, they cultivate the rarest type called the  ‘Damask Rose’ (Rosa Damascena),  as well as the nicknamed Cabbage Rose’ (Rosa Centifolia) plant.

Fun Fact:  Did you know that it takes approximately 4000 kilograms of rose petals  to produce 1 kilogram of pure rose essential oil?   Just imagining the volumes of petals is mind-boggling, let alone the final product.  It’s for this reason a small bottle of pure essential oil is extremely expensive.

What therapeutic benefits can we obtain from using Rose essential oil?

It contains a super strong floral smell which contains a number of fantastic elements.  Let me share some of them:

•    Citronellol is also found in Citronella makes Rose essential oil an effective bug repellent, whilst Farnesol, which can be found in Orange blossom, Jasmine and Ylang-Ylang are all natural pesticides.

•   Natural Perfume of Rose oil is incredible, without adding anything extra to it, allowing the cosmetics industry to use it as the base for many of ts products.  Rose essential oil by itself can be used as a fragrance, avoiding the need to include synthetic scents which many commercial products contain.

•   Anti-Depressant & Mood Booster where the scent can aid one’s mood & anxiety levels with its pleasant, fragrant smell.

•  Aids Acne Treatment where adding Rose Essential oil to your beauty regime can assist in getting rid of the bacteria responsible for pimples.  This wonderful oil can be found in our Magic Serum which gently treats Acne spots for all ages and skin types.   It’s also contained in Just Soothing  to assist treating Eczema.

•   Anti-Aging Properties  with its anti-inflammatory effects, containing antioxidants which fight free radicals that cause our skin’s cells to become damaged, wrinkled, dehydrated and aged.   Rose Essential oil can be found in the Nourishing Face Balm for women Over 30s, keeping your skin well hydrated and wrinkle free, whilst treating mild Rosacea & Eczema.

How can you use Rose Essential Oils?

•     Using a diffuser, add the oil to it for aromatic inhalation within the household.  This will make your home naturally refreshed, or you can add a few drops of oil with water into a spritzing bottle.

•    When applying directly to your skin, ensure that it’s diluted with a vegetable oil like Coconut, Jojoba or Apricot.  You can also use rose floral waters or hydrolats in the skincare pampering process.  These are generated after the distillation process of extracting the essential oils.  Rose absolutes can also be used in this way, and don’t require mixing as they are already diluted.

Dollop of honey please

Dollop of Honey Please Dec2020

Dollop of Honey Please!

Raw natural golden goodness
aids our health & skin!

QR BLOGDEC20

Don’t you just love a spoonful or a dollop of honey?

Historically, honey was used by the ancient Egyptians as a sacrifice to their gods/deities.It was also added as a sweetener and in making honey cakes, which were then offered to the gods.Honey was also used to embalm their dead. The ancient Egyptians included honey as a topic ointment as its antibacterial properties helped treat infected wounds.They were aware of the secrets contained in a dollop of golden goodness, way back then!

Did you know that Honey contains amazing attributes for our health?Let me share some of them:

Provides a natural source of Energy – Honey contains around 80% natural sugars, 18% water with 2 % consists of minerals vitamins, protein and pollen.It obtained the nickname as ‘a perfect running fuel’, forming liver glycogen, which can be easily absorbed to boost the start of your day.It’s one of the best carbohydrates to consume before exercising, and often found in health bars used by sports-people.Taking a spoonful of Honey first thing in the morning on an empty stomach can give you an immediate kick start to boost your energy levels for the whole day.

Aids with Sleep – Having a spoonful of honey at night time can aid digestion, relax the mind and body as well as assist with obtaining a great night’s sleep. This is because the liver’s glycogen supplies are restocked, preventing the brain from triggering a panicking search for fuel when you wake up.Also, eating raw honey allows the brain to release melatonin, creating small spikes of insulin levels. This stimulates tryptophan in the brain, which converts to serotonin, that converts to melatonin, boosting immunity, rebuilding tissues and cells whilst resting and sleep.Being a natural aid for sleep, honey lowers the risk of other more serious health problems, including hypertension, which can arise from poor sleep.

Powerhouse of Antioxidants – Raw honey taken on a daily basis can promote the levels of antioxidants in your body, which help block free radicals that can create havoc or illness in our system.These powerful antioxidants found in honey contain polyphenols which can reduce the risk of heart disease, whilst boosting the immune system.

Assisting with Weight Management – Replacing sugar with honey can not only lower blood sugar levels, but can also prevent piling on extra kilos.This is due to raw honey activating the hormones to suppress the appetite.However, this does not suggest or recommend the over-consumption of honey as the substitute.To assist with losing weight:Start your day with a high protein breakfast, reduce the refined carbohydrates, add fatty fish to your diet, drink plenty of water, reduce your salt intake and include soluble fibre as well as some exercise to your daily routine.

Aids Allergies to Pollen – Working as a natural relief for allergies due to the bee pollen contained in raw natural honey.It helps boost immunity, as the pollen collected from various flowers in the gardens forms the honey’s genetic make-up. By consuming raw honey like an allergy shot that contains pollen, many sufferers become desensitized to these flowers which would otherwise cause them to have an allergic reaction.

Assists healing wounds – Bandages that have been infused with honey are known to provide healing effect.This is because honey has natural antibacterial properties, making hydrogen peroxide when it reacts with the body’s fluids, which creates an unwelcome environment for bacteria.Honey has also been used in some parts of the world to dress wounds, as well as treating various kinds of ulcers.

Images: Unsplash flowers & bees by Michael Held & Anthony Lee, Bee Hive Wolfgang Hasselmann, Swiss Bees.

On our many travel journeys, we have seen numerous beehives along rugged coastal terrain, with a wonderful selection of plants for the bees to collect.The taste of this raw, organic honey is unlike anything else; it’s like being amongst the flowers that the bees have had the pleasure of pollenating.

What’s the differences between Raw Honey and commercially produced honey?

• Raw honey is the purest form when its crude form is taken immediately from the cells of the honey comb within the bee hive.It will contain bee pollen and propolis two very healthy additions.It may also contain beeswax, together with impurities and dead bees. However, these bits are normally strained out before the raw honey is bottled.

• Raw honey should not be heated above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) as it’s the temperature of a bee hive.Raw honey can be strained, but it’s never filtered or pasteurised, nor will it contain other additives.
The colour of raw honey should be opaque, not clear or golden or syrup-like.

• Organic honey will have passed the country’s set of standards and conditions to have the title ‘Organic’ granted.
It is otherwise raw organic honey, not heated above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). It would have been processed similarly through the straining process.

• Commercially generated honey requires excessive heat, is chemically refined and processed heavily to obtain the clear, sparkly colour.
This process can destroy and remove the phytonutrients like pollen, vitamins and minerals and enzyme-rich propolis which are beneficial for our health.

• Other non-raw honey or commercially produced jars can be sourced from bees that are treated with antibiotics.The bees may have been given other ‘nourishment’ ingredients including forms of sugar, low-cost syrup, or high fructose corn syrup.Some of these commercial hives may have non-organic materials and additives, and will not have bee pollen in them.

Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand from the 1830s, when bees were brought from England to pollinate the Manuka bush.
Manuka is naturally sweet, has a rich but earthy flavour, containing many beneficial compounds with antibacterial properties. It can be found in its pure form, or added to herbal creams and antibiotics, masks and skincare products.It contains:

•Carbohydrates/sugar,
• Methylglyoxal (MG) and hydrogen peroxide,
• Enzymes such as diastase and glucose oxidase,
• Amino acid proteins which are the building blocks,
• B Vitamins (including B6, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid)
• Organic acids
• Trace minerals such as calcium, folate, phosphorus, potassium
• Flavonoids, polyphenols, alkaloids and volatile compounds.

If you haven’t already tried this honey, see if you can get your hands on it!

Making your own sugar scrub for weekly pampering:

You’ll need 1 teaspoon of raw honey, 4 tablespoons of brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of Olive oil and around 6 drops of essential oil. Choose from Lavender, Tea Tree or Mandarin.
Add the oil and honey, add the sugar and blend well before adding the essential oils. Store in a tight jar and keep in a cool dark place. Use when needed!

Hands Need Tender Loving Care

Hands Need Tender Loving Care

Hands Need
Tender Loving Care

In all aspects of life,
they connect us to
ourselves & each other.

QR BLOGNOV19

Goodbye summer and hello weather changes in the Northern Hemisphere. Whilst my family and friends are gearing up for their Spring and Summer festivities in Australia, the end of their school years and a Christmas BBQs at the beach, we’re preparing ourselves for a cold one!Snow has already started to fall on the nearby peaks of Zurich Switzerland.

The heaters in our homes and shopping centres tend to do us more harm than good.Constantly taking off our warm winter woollies in order to browse the overheated shop, before putting everything back before stepping into the chilly weather. I remember doing this when visiting my cousin in London last year … it was so frustrating taking your jackets, scarves, gloves off whilst shopping on Kensington High Street, only to have carry it whilst browsing, and put it back on before leaving the store!Do you find this annoying too?

My advice to those who feel their skin drying out during the winter periods:
Stay hydrated by drinking water or herbal teas. The recommended daily intake of water is based on specific age groups:Children from 5-8 years of age should have 5 glasses or 1 litre, 9-12 years of age should have 7 glasses or 1.5 litres, and from 13+/Adults, should drink 8-10 glasses or 2 litres of water.This will help flush out toxins and keep your skin looking fabulously fresh ;
Be Gentle with your skin all the time, irrespective of what you’re doing – cleansing, shaving, moisturising. Avoid using really hot water against your hands or body as it can also dry you out, and
could make sensitive skin blotchy. It’s better to use tepid or lukewarm water, which will prevent breaking the small veins on your face ;
Wear breathable fibres like 100% cotton when staying warm.This will prevent unnecessary irritation, sweating, sticking or itching to your skin and body, which normally happens with synthetics, polyester and other non-natural garments.
Keep a bowl of water in your room at night time to allow that to be evaporated instead of the moisture contained in your skin.Ensure that your heating is also turned down whilst sleeping at night;
Leave the diffuser on with your either blend of Breathe Easy Concentrate or Blissful Minds ;
Apply your choice of Hand Creams and if necessary, wear your cotton gloves to keep them from dehydrating whilst you sleep.

Product selections:
• For Hands, choose from Geranium Hands & Body, Rosey Hemp Hands or for hands that are cracked, use Renew Balm.;
• For Children, apply Natural Baby Moisturising Oil which is gentle enough from their faces to their feet.
• For the Concentrates, choose from Kids Breathe Easy Concentrate and Adults Breathe Easy Concentrate or Blissful Minds.

These Concentrated Serums are made in a Carrier Oil, making them safe to add to the bath or diffuser. They help with Congestion, coughs and headaches.
• Ensure your body and feet are also moisturised after showering to keep the rest of your skin feeling soft.
• Other products to keep your skin hydrated can be found in the Body Eyes Feet Hands & Lips category of the webpage.There is also the Mums Pamper Pack with Tango Twinkle Toes & Geranium Hands & Body.

These Winter tips will help keep your skin feeling wonderful soft all winter long.As stated in the Newsletter, I’m discounting the Hands Products this month so that you can get your Pot of Magic and take care of your hands during winter. Your hands need Tender Loving Care.

‘Hands & Body Butters keeping our hands soft & hydrated’

The Essential Oils contained in our all-natural Hands products include Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis Organic), Cypress (Cupressus Sempervirens), whilst the Rosey Hemp Hands contains Rose (Rosa Centifolia) Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini).
The Benefits of these concentrated essential oils include:

Geranium is non-irritating, non-toxic which is wound-healing with its antiseptic properties.It helps improve circulation whilst assisting and improving the health of your skin;
Sweet Orange is ideal for dry or problem skin types, as it’s a wonderful skin tonic that helps to decongest and removes built up toxins on the skin. Being rich in antioxidants, this promotes natural regeneration of cells, minimising the signs of ageing;
Cypress has antiseptic properties which helps to improve tone and assists in treating varicose veins, spider veins and broken capillaries;
Rose contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds which make this a fabulous ingredient especially for dry or ageing skin. It helps refine skin texture and tone whilst managing irritating skin conditions like Dermatitis and Psoriasis;
Palmarosa has skin healing and hydrating properties, which improve the condition of dehydrated skin.

These all-natural ingredients have been carefully selected when creating the products for your skin, as their benefits are so amazing, allowing for an accelerated process for regenerating and hydrating the cells.

What do I see with Touching Hands?

In the newsletter, I added a picture of a group of hands and felt there was such a strong bond and connection with those touching each other, that it was more than just about applying a product to make it feel soft and wonderful.Lately, this has resonated so strongly with me. Perhaps this is because I live so far away from those that I consider is important to me and my family.

What I see when I look at that picture:Love, Friendship, Assistance, Diversity, Inclusion, Help, Connections, Healing, Belief, Encouragement, Compassion, Faith, Hope, Family, Strength, Teamwork, Ability, Willingness, Listening, Guidance, Reassurance, Perseverance, Togetherness, Participation, Unity, Appreciation, Edification, Building, Communication, Trust, Security, Gratitude, Self-lessness, Humility, Sensations, Charitable, Confidence, Safety & Bonds. This list is by no means finished, but it’s huge when looking at only ONE picture.

So what’s the fascination with physical touch, the first sensation, and language we learn.For a mother and her baby, it strengthens the attachment, encouraging security and safety.Depending on the kind of touch that is given, it can create either positive or negative emotions.As our kids get older, touch as a sign of affection is necessary to help reassure and build up their confidence.When we share our lives with another, touch becomes an important aspect of communicating, whether it’s transmitting the feeling of comfort, or more intense sensations which can cause the heart to race from excitement. We want to make sure we’re using touch as a powerful form of communication to keep us grounded and bonded together.

However, in life lately, I have noticed that there is only a handful who are willing to reach out, grab and hang onto your hands, especially when life or situations become tough and stressful.The journey we strive on is often challenging, it can be lonely and isolating.We sometimes forget about those that helped us when we almost lost everything, or had nothing and struggled to get back up onto our feet, making it easier to reach a higher potential.I look back at some of the hardships we faced and remember with fondness those who were there, despite distance and international time zones.

To those who have been an element of strength and compassion for my family and me, we are humbled with gratitude and appreciate your words of encouragement.You helped us believe in a bigger picture that we were unable to see during that crisis, whether it was from exhaustion or fear of the unknown.

What I have also noticed and learned is how being proud, self-centred, lacking gratitude or appearing better than others just encourages narcissist behaviours which will cause rifts and ultimately break off those wonderful and beautiful relationships.The world is big enough for many characteristics, and I’d rather keep my eyes focused on the greater good in others, hoping that they too can assist those around them by lifting, building, strengthening bonds and making the life we live a better one.

Always try to be the best version of yourself and let the world see Your Own Kind of Beautiful.

Taking Time Out – Allows you to chillax, Relax & be kind to yourself, whilst recovering, in order to get your health back on track.

I recently wrote about our wonderfully fun travels in Italy … we love going there and enjoying everything it has to offer. Great food, wonderful beaches, fun people and other adventurers making their way to Italy. What I dreaded the most was the consequences of my indulgent eating habits catching up to me.

And it did catch up, in a number of way. First with my weight, piling on a few too many kilos that made me feel uncomfortable and self-conscious.I would wear baggy clothes just to hide some of it.

It also irritated my skin, as the build-up of dairy products in my system eventually comes out on my hands. They were irritated, swollen, cracked, itchy and bleeding.Has this happened to you?

I can never know how long it will take for my body to rid itself of the build-up of lactose in my system.
But one thing it needs is time, persistence and patience. The irritations began in August and are still not 100% in October. That’s nearly 3 months of discipline. This just goes to show that there is never a quick overnight solution to long-term problems. Whilst I apply my products continuously throughout the day, the main factor that helps me resolve it is controlling my diet. I must ensure that it’s dairy-free to prevent Eczema become part of my life. Don’t get me wrong – I do enjoy some dairy products, I just should not eat them as they are not good for me and my body if I want to remain Eczema Free.

In June, I weighed myself and was not happy with what the scales showed.Since returning from holidays in August, I cut back without totally eliminating carbs from my diet. I removed the dairy products which I’m intolerant to anyways, in order to allow my body the time needed to heal and get my hands sorted out again. I asked my family to help out too, with tasks like washing up, as even hot water can cause my skin to become irritated. It’s so frustrating and yet time, persistence and patience is needed for me to get the results I want.

Today I am less bloated from changing what foods I have been eating. When weighing myself recently, I have lost 5.4 kilos which have allowed me to move down a notch on my belt. I am really pleased considering this is happened without doing gym-type exercise. I still have a while to go to reach and remain in my ideal weight bracket.

The other thing is taking the advice from those that are older than us. Our 89-year-old neighbour recently passed away, leaving behind his wife of 61 years of marriage and 2 daughters. The years he suffered being unwell meant he spent a lot of time going back and forth between the hospital, the elderly people’s home, and his own place.It caused a lot of anguish and stress for his wife, never knowing if he would be well enough to just stay home without any need for assistance.
We talked about his health and the advice she gave me was, ‘Don’t leave things unfixed or too late if they need to be resolved. Get them sorted out whilst you can.’ So it’s time for me to finally go and get myself sorted and take time out.

Diastasis Recti, an umbilical hernia is when your intestine or other tissues inside your abdominal cavity bulge through the weak spot around the belly button, leading to an alien-looking “outie” belly button.In addition to protruding outward, the belly button area may also become swollen and a bit painful.

My hernia pops out like an alien hand especially if I have eaten too much.It was bothering me for a while now, and this year I have decided to get it sorted out. On the 24th of October, I’ll be having this operation, removing that little alien and whatever else shouldn’t be there, whilst having the split muscle meshed back in.It will mean resting up for 10 days as I will be unable to lift or put too much emphasis on my core muscles. I could risk damaging the operation repair and having the muscle tear again.I will be able to just chillax, relax and allow my family here take care of me for a change. Though the downside is having to put all production of new products on hold for a while.

About the Diastasis Recti – which ironically can also be caused by doing lots of core exercises!
The most common can develop during the 2nd trimester, peak during the 3rd and remain after delivery. During the pregnancy, the hormones such as relaxin are released which can weaken the tissues of the abs. Whilst the belly is growing, the ab muscles are thinned and stretched, adding pressure to the whole abdominal region. Months after the birth of the child, the abdominal muscles can naturally come together with a little, improving any Diastasis Recti, though it’s not always totally resolved. It’s even more common for those giving birth to twins or having multiple pregnancies where the initial hernia was already existing.

Diastasis Recti isn’t a serious condition, nor particularly dangerous, but it makes sense to treat it before it gets bigger. It could lead to postural problems and other symptoms if left too long. Speak with your Doctor, Gynaecologist, or physical therapist especially if you have pain and discomfort in your abdominal area or back. Always get medical help if you see other signs of a hernia, have severe gastrointestinal issues, notice swelling around your abs that lasts more than several days. You should visit your primary doctor or even a general surgeon to have a CT scan if you have a true concern about having a hernia, since this may require medical intervention.

Other factors for hernias include:
• Being Obese or gaining weight, especially around the belly area;
• Being over the age of 35;
• Having injuries. trauma or surgery to the abdominal area;
• Repetitive core exercises such as Pilates and stomach crunches could increase your risk;
• Exercises and sports that require you to arch your back and twist from side to side can also increase your risk. These include sports like Tennis, Golf, Gymnastics, Yoga, Biking, Weight-lifting and even swimming.
• Injecting the abdominal area with steroids can cause the muscles to weaken.
Who would have thought that being naturally flexible can cause the connective tissues to stretch and thin out?

Gallery: Diastasis Recti Hernia, Hands Body Lips Products, Time out., Post Operation, Grapes.

Other natural ways of preventing a hernia:
1. Do some physical therapy;
2. Make sure your exercises are specific for strengthening the core without further damaging the area;
3. Try to prevent adding abdominal pressure to the area – lifting, carrying;
4. Keeping a healthy weight; and
5. Treating hernias before they become bigger.
