Neroli Essential oil (Citrus aurantium) had been used for centuries in Ancient Egypt, where the priests and priestesses included it in their spiritual worship rituals and physical aspects, like incense is used in churches today.  Neroli Essential Oil is associated with being in love, romance, often used for Chinese weddings, as it symbolises omens for purity, fruitfulness, fertility and moral virtue.   Ancient Chinese used it in their wedding bouquets, where eligible bachelors used the ‘collection of orange blossoms’ when looking for a wife.  It was also traded in both Egypt and China for its medicinal benefits.

The bitter orange was originally grown in Tunisia and Northern Africa, before being cultivated in France and throughout the Mediterranean regions. Today it’s also grown in parts of Florida and California USA.

Why is Neroli fit for a Princess? By the end of the 17th Century, Anne Marie Orsini, the French born woman who became the Duchess of Bracciano & Princess of Nerola in Italy was using this orange essential oil as perfume. She would add it to her baths and onto her gloves. ‘Neroli’ became the name to describe the essence as a result.

Fun Fact:  To create just one kilogram of this wonderfully deep and intoxicating mix of citrus with floral aromas, over one thousand kilograms of hand-picked flowers need to be collected. By-products of the Citrus tree’s fruit include Orange flower absolute from the peels, Neroli Essential oil from steam-distilling the small, white, waxy flowers, Orange blossom water from the steam distillation process, and the leaves yielding Petitgrain oil.

How beneficial is Neroli Essential Oil for our Health?

There are many wonderful benefits from using Neroli Essential Oil.  It contains a super strong floral smell which contains a number of fantastic elements.  Let me share some of them:

Skin Repairer & Rejuvenator – Neroli Essential oil is known for its capacity to regenerate skin cells, together with improving its elasticity. Included in Essentially Lili’s Ladies range of skincare products, it is extremely beneficial for maintaining and invigorating your cells.  It aids prevention of wrinkles, scars and stretch marks, treating bacterial conditions and rashes.  These include Frankincense Face Serum, Diamond Era Balm, Cool Eyes and Tango Twinkle Toes.

Antimicrobial & Antioxidants – Neroli Essential oil has both antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, which allows it to kill microorganisms and stop growth of their bacterial agents.

Reducing Inflammation & Pain – studies conducted and written about in the Journal of Natural Medicines found its’ ability to diminish chronic & acute inflammation, as well as the sensitivity to that irritation.

Using Neroli Oil as part of your regular day:

Purify the air in your home – add a few drops to your diffuser to clean the air and inhale the anti-germ properties it contains.

Clear Your Head & Reduce stress – adding a few drops to your warm bath can aid lowering anxiety & stress, or inhaling Neroli before a hectic journey could give you a more pleasant perspective.

Helping you to sleep – put a few drops on a cotton ball and slip it inside your pillow case for a relaxing wonderful night’s sleep.

Skincare magic – seeing that it contains strong antibacterial composition, it’s able to treat acne breakouts gently, whilst regenerating skin cells.

Neroli Essential Oil is contained in the Frankincense Face Serum and Cool Eyes to help repair and maintain the youthful appearance of your skin.

Remember, whenever you’re applying essential oils directly to your skin, ensure that it’s diluted with a vegetable oil like Coconut, Jojoba or Apricot.  Use this on your skin, on stretch marks or broken capillaries to help reduce their appearance.   It’s often used with other citrus oils like Bergamot, Orange and Petitgrain.

Summarising the benefits of Neroli Oil:  It’s quite easy to see why Anne Marie Orsini, the Duchess of Bracciano & Princess of Nerola, Italy, loved using the orange essence in her baths and on her gloves.

Neroli is used quite a lot in Aromatherapy as its properties can reduce feelings of anxiety and stress, increasing a peacefulness and calm.   The rejuvenating oil contains a natural chemical called Citral, which is the main element found in citrus fruit’s peel oil, particularly orange peel.  This is what helps to regenerate cells, promoting growth and restoration. For this reason, it is said to be very good at preventing and minimising stretch marks, whilst the antiseptic & antibacterial properties balance oil production, guard against breakouts, shrinks enlarged pores without drying the skin, revives its appearance and keeps it clean.   It helps treat oily, sensitive and mature skin as Neroli is great for smoothing fine lines and toning sagging skin.

Therapeutic Benefit of Roses

A Gorgeous Fragrant Flower, Wonderful in Aiding
Beauty, Wellness & Health.

QR BLOG APR2023

As mentioned in the April 2023 Newsletter, this time of the year finds the streets of Zürich covered in white & pink Cherry Blossoms & Magnolia buds.   The fountains in the old town are also filled with roses from the 1st to the 10th of April.  It started as an initiative by the Churches of Zürich to ‘spread peace & hope to all’, where all the thorns are removed from the variety of rose buds which are placed in the water.

Historically, Rose oil was regarded exotic due to its unique elegance & fragrance.  It was quickly appreciated & grown by early civilizations as far back as 5000 years ago.  During ancient times, the Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks, Indians, Persians and Romans included the use of rose essential oil for medicinal purposes, which are identical to how it’s being used today.

Steam distillation was the process started by the Persians, which allowed the extracted oil to be used for treating scars as it is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, astringent and allows cells to rejuvenate.   The remaining rose water was utilised as a method for giving scent to their bodies.   Rose oil extracted by distillation from various types of petals occurs still today, and is commonly used in aromatherapy.   The oil is rich in Citronellol, it can be sedative, relieve stress, encompassing anti-depressive qualities in its aroma.

From the Middle Ages, rose oil extracted has been the base element in cosmetics and perfumery all over the world.  Bulgaria ‘Rose Valley’ is the world’s number one producer & global exporter of rose oil, followed closely by Turkey and Morocco.  In Bulgaria, they cultivate the rarest type called the  ‘Damask Rose’ (Rosa Damascena),  as well as the nicknamed Cabbage Rose’ (Rosa Centifolia) plant.

Fun Fact:  Did you know that it takes approximately 4000 kilograms of rose petals  to produce 1 kilogram of pure rose essential oil?   Just imagining the volumes of petals is mind-boggling, let alone the final product.  It’s for this reason a small bottle of pure essential oil is extremely expensive.

What therapeutic benefits can we obtain from using Rose essential oil?

It contains a super strong floral smell which contains a number of fantastic elements.  Let me share some of them:

•   Natural Perfume of Rose oil is incredible, without adding anything extra to it, allowing the cosmetics industry to use it as the base for many of ts products.  Rose essential oil by itself can be used as a fragrance, avoiding the need to include synthetic scents which many commercial products contain.

•   Anti-Depressant & Mood Booster where the scent can aid one’s mood & anxiety levels with its pleasant, fragrant smell.

•  Aids Acne Treatment where adding Rose Essential oil to your beauty regime can assist in getting rid of the bacteria responsible for pimples.  This wonderful oil can be found in our Magic Serum which gently treats Acne spots for all ages and skin types.   It’s also contained in Just Soothing  to assist treating Eczema.

•   Anti-Aging Properties  with its anti-inflammatory effects, containing antioxidants which fight free radicals that cause our skin’s cells to become damaged, wrinkled, dehydrated and aged.   Rose Essential oil can be found in the Nourishing Face Balm for women Over 30s, keeping your skin well hydrated and wrinkle free, whilst treating mild Rosacea & Eczema.

How can you use Rose Essential Oils?

•     Using a diffuser, add the oil to it for aromatic inhalation within the household.  This will make your home naturally refreshed, or you can add a few drops of oil with water into a spritzing bottle.

•    When applying directly to your skin, ensure that it’s diluted with a vegetable oil like Coconut, Jojoba or Apricot.  You can also use rose floral waters or hydrolats in the skincare pampering process.  These are generated after the distillation process of extracting the essential oils.  Rose absolutes can also be used in this way, and don’t require mixing as they are already diluted.

Secrets of Passion Fruit

Secrets of Passion Fruit

Secrets of Passion Fruit

A delicious summer taste with
benefits for your skin & overall health.

I wanted to share what gorgeous benefits Passion Fruit (Passiflora edulis and Passiflora flavicarpa) have. They are often found on cakes like pavlova, in drink combinations or part of the exotic summer fruits selection. But what is it about this tiny fruit that makes us feel happy, both inside and out?

The plant and fruit is native to South America, grown in some regions of southern Brazil, through Paraguay and northern Argentina. It’s also found in other tropical regions of the world like India, Africa, Hawaii and Australia. Historically passion fruit was used for lowering inflammation, assisting and improving digestion, together with protecting the skin. Studies today are considering that it may also protect against other inflammatory conditions such as heart-related concerns and insulin resistance.

The Passion fruits are cultivated commercially for its sweet-sour, somewhat tarty, highly aromatic and seedy fruit. Round or oval in shape, it’s like a berry appearing yellow or dark purple when ready for picking, depending on where it’s grown.
It’s regarded as a Pepo, which is a fruit with a fleshy and multiple seeded interior and a harder outer rind. Melons and Cucumbers are also regarded as Pepos.

Consumption information about Passion Fruit:

• You can indulge in all the gelatinous pulp that’s full of edible but tarty tasting seeds! Either scoop out the pulp with a spoon and place it in a bowl, or brave and eat it all without sharing!!
• The fruit can be eaten, juiced, added to other combinations of summer selections to enhance both the flavour and the aroma.
• You would need to consume six (6) passion fruits to make up one portion of your 5 a day. Whilst that’s loads of seeds to ingest, the alternative is eat ten (10) blackberries or half (½) an aubergine!!
• Passion fruit is a Superfood as it is an excellent source of Antioxidants like Vitamins C and A, contains polyphenols and carotenoid.
• It contains a decent number of Essential minerals, including magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and calcium.
• Including Passion fruit in our diet can support bone health, physical, digestive and cardiovascular functionality.
• It can support digestion when consuming the rich in fibre seeds instead of just the juice.
• The fruit is high in fibre called pectin, which is lower in sugar compared to other fruits. It can provide necessary nutrients without causing blood sugar levels to spike too much.
(Note: If you have concerns with diabetes and insulin, please consult your Dietician Specialist before over-indulging).

This plant can grow up to 10 metres (33 ft) high, with fragrant leaves that look like an open handed palm, and magnificent looking flowers containing an array of colours like blue, white and brown. The edible orange fleshy fruit can grow up to 6 cms, can be somewhat bland in taste. The part of the plant that grows above the ground is used for its gentle and calming properties, consisting of natural healing, food flavouring, teas, infusions, liquid extracts or tinctures.

Blue Passion Flower can be combined with relaxing and calming herbs like chamomile, hops, kava, skullcap, lemon balm and valerian root.

Trivia About Passion Fruit:

Apparently, dreaming about Passion fruits suggests that in future, you will be able to do positive and sensible things. It reflects a sign of abundance, growth and financial gain, where being in this growth stage means you’re going in the right direction!

The fruit symbolises abundance, associated with the goddesses of fertility and the harvest. It often represents earthly pleasures, temptations and over-indulgence.

Some passion fruit contains high levels of caffeine, which will make it more difficult to relax and fall asleep. Passion fruit tea, however, contains alkaloids, which can aid your nervous system relaxing, making you tired and achieving a better night’s sleep.

Whilst the seeds and flesh of purple passion fruit can be eaten, the outer skin contains small quantities of cyanogenic glycosides (cyanide) and should not be consumed.
Therefore, commercial passion fruit juice goes through a process to deacidify via electrodialysis for this reason.
