Keratosis pilaris is often called ‘chicken skin’, which looks like many small, rough or red little bumps on the skin. It often appears on the upper arms, cheeks, buttocks and thighs, around the hair follicles.Normally dead skin cells flake off the skin. Whilst the cause of it is not totally understood, researchers believe that sometimes, the keratin formed around the hair follicles builds up or becomes twisted which causes the clogging the pores, resulting in the bumps.Keratosis pilaris is generally linked with other skin conditions like atopic dermatitis and eczema. It also tends to happen during childhood and adolescence, though whilst not always the case, it usually disappears by adulthood.

From Wikipedia, ‘Keratin’ is part of the fibrous structural protein family, otherwise known as ‘scleroproteins’ which is found in vertebrae. It’s responsible for making hair and nails, as well as our outer layer of skin.Keratin protects cells from becoming damaged or stressed, is extremely insoluble in organic solvents and water. It’s an essential building block for our skin, necessary for generating new cells.

Usually the condition can become worse during the winter months, as the skin tends to dry out more when the weather is less humid.Another factor seems to be the age of the person suffering, frequently appearing in childhood, reaching the peak during the adolescent years and vanishing by adulthood.

So what can we do to help treat the condition naturally? Here’s a few things we can add to our daily routine to help reduce the built-up keratin on the skin:

Dry Brush the Area – this technique can help remove the dead skin cells as well as unclog the pores.
Gently and preferably on dry skin, you can use a natural bristle brush or loofa in sweeping movements, as though you were brushing long hair. The last thing you want to do is hard brushing to further irritate your skin’s condition. Once the dry brushing is done, wash yourself in the shower and ensure your skin is pat dried. Apply the moisturiser to your body to invigorate the newly brushed cells.

Exfoliate the area with Sea Salt – The key is always being gentle to the areas you are exfoliating to ensure you’re not further aggravating the skin.Sea Salt contains anti-inflammatory properties that help calm and soothes the skin, whilst removing the dead skin cells, encouraging moisture levels to be maintained. Pink Himalayan salt is also great for achieving this.Below I’ll share some additional homemade scrub and the previous blog of ideas that you can put together from home ingredients.

Mild instead of Harsh Soaps – Preferably made with natural and non-toxic ingredients. This will allow the sensitive affected area to be cleansed, preventing further irritation, redness, or build-up. Further suggestions will be added below.

Moisturising Your Skin – Using non-irritating skincare products which have beneficial ingredients that are anti-inflammatory, rich in vitamins, reduce redness, hydrate and soothe the skin is what you are looking for.The idea is to find a product that you can leave on your skin, containing ingredients like Avocado, Jojoba, Coconut which will give your skin this natural boost required to keep it feeling wonderfully soft rather than dry, rough or flaky.Suggestions for the body butters we make containing rich ingredients will be added below.

Humidifiers – can actually bring moisture back to your environment, especially during the cold winter months, when your skin feels its driest. This can be kept in the bedroom or the most central part of the living area to ensure the whole space has moisture. Other tips for keeping moisture will be added below.

Eating Foods that are Anti-Inflammatory – can help your body utilize the vitamins and minerals required for skin cell growth.Green leafy vegetables, colourful ingredients like carrots and beets, berries, salmon, and those rich in Omega3 will all play their part. These anti-inflammatory ingredients provide antioxidants, encourage cells to repair, and reduce swelling too. Drinking water will also assist with flushing away toxins that may have built up in your system as well as keeping your body hydrated.

DIY Homemade Scrubs, Soaps, Body Butters, Vegetable Oils

A few suggestions to help improve your skin’s condition include making your own Homemade scrub combining:

Sea Salt, Raw Coarse Sugar & Olive Oil is quick and easy to mix together, great for removing any dead skin cells, especially from over washed hands;

Pink Himalayan Sea Salt and Raw Honey , which has natural skin-boosting nutrients, acids and feels wonderfully moisturising on the skin. Once made, apply in the shower to the area affected with Keratosis pilaris, gently rubbing into the skin.After approximately 15 minutes, rinse off with warm water;

Blend Pink Himalayan Sea Salt and Vegetable Oils together. Suggestions include either Coconut, Avocado or Jojoba oils. Apply these to the affected areas and the rest of your body as they have natural skin-boosting nutrients and acids which feel wonderfully moisturising on the skin. Please ensure the base is a Carrier oil especially if you are planning to add Lavender or Peppermint Essential Oils to the mix. Note: Peppermint Essential oil is not suitable for expecting/nursing women.

Using Vegetable Oils , like Avocado, Coconut, Jojoba Oil are extremely rich in Vitamins. They allow the skin to absorb the benefits, reduce redness, allowing the skin cells to regenerate whilst keeping it hydrated. Below are the Essentially Lili Products that can help keep your skin hydrated;

Refer to the previous blog: What’s in your fridge for more suggestions.

Essentially Lili Range of Body Butters containing ingredients rich in antioxidants:
The Jazz Body Butter contains Avocado, which is rich in Vitamins A, which can help reduce redness and encourage skin cell support. The other body butters, Mint Body Butter & Geranium Hands & Body contain ingredients like Coconut, Apricot, Soyabean, Grapeseed & Sweet Almond which are also bursting with benefits for the skin’s condition. The scents with the particular essential oils are subtle, yet refreshing. If you love mint, you’ll be tempted to eat the product (not suggesting it though) whilst the Jazz has a gentle Asian Fusion of Lemongrass and Jasmine.

Adding a bowl of water to a dry room during the winter months can assist with maintaining moisture in the rooms. It’s also important to ensure the heating is turned down whilst sleeping, as this can also draw moisture from your skin, leaving it feeling super-dry the following morning.

Castile Soap can be used to prevent the Keratosis pilaris becoming worse. Traditionally made with Olive Oil, you can include Jojoba Oil, Honey, Lavender and Vitamin E to your blend to keep your skin softly treated whilst washing up. I’ll write more about Castile Soap in the future blogs.

To conclude, Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition affecting more youth than it does adults. The surface of the skin feels rough and bumpy, usually caused by clogged pores. The most effective way to treat it is by gently exfoliating to remove dead skin cells and encouraging the pores to become unblocked. Also, by keeping the area moisturised with natural products, avoiding those that are toxic or harsh to the skin. The ingredients to assist hydration should include Avocado, Jojoba, Coconut Oil, Sea Salt, Raw Honey, Lavender Essential Oil and Castile soap.

You can remember your teens like it was yesterday – going through your body’s changes, hormones, studying, having that crush on that cutest boy/girl at school. Some of us had those awkward braces to wear for straightening our teeth. Does that ring a bell? Probably the worst part about our teens is the acne breakouts. Just when you think it’s all sorted, another one rears its ugly head and screams at you when you get up … ‘ GOOD MORNING I AM A NEW ZIT & I AM HERE RIGHT ON YOUR FOREHEAD, NOSE, AND CHIN FOR EVERYONE TO SEE’ … Oh-M-Gee, Totally Cringeworthy.

How did you feel during those times? Embarrassed, self-conscious, frustrated, worried about what people were going to think of you? What was the first thing you would do? Ok, 3rd thing, because the first thing was probably want to crawl back into bed and hide, the 2nd thing you wanted to do was POP IT and so the 3rd thing you wanted to do was cover it up.

But what if you’re a boy or as we say in Australia, a young fella, bloke? You can’t put on foundation or cover-up without being laughed at… or can you? Some kids were ‘lucky’ when the didn’t get so many on their faces, but they had them on their shoulders and back. During the wintertime when no-one sees them, it’s no big deal, but when the summer arrives, that hidden factor suddenly comes to the surface for everyone to see.

My parents grew up in Sicily, Italy, and were eating a lot of whole foods from the land, which was not processed or spoilt by Commercial pesticides. When we were teenagers, the association with the foods we were eating with allergies and skin problems were not linked. It’s ironic because our parents had such great skin with a natural, healthy glow about them, whilst the generation after us were showing a different story. Many were overweight and their skin was showing more spots, acne or other problems.

Whilst I write this, I want you to understand that I was one of those teens – overweight, spots, eating secretly when no-one was watching and trying to overcome not only issues like Acne but Eczema as well.

Today I have noticed that this ‘teen cycle’ is happening again for those in their ’20s, ’30s and often in the ’40s. I’m sure if you hated it then, you will be feeling even more frustrated and self-conscious as an adult with kids looking like a teenager, right?
But why is it happening? There are a number of reasons why:

The foods we eat – Sometimes what we are eating no longer agrees with our internal gut system. It’s become sluggish and is working like an old car that needs to have its oil changed.
Our bodies are changing – There’s no date for when this should start to happen to us, but it will at some stage begin.
Stress – This can be the biggest killer. Stress can mess up our minds, our relationships, our work environment and ultimately our bodies.
Skincare routine – Often we use products that are too harsh as they strip the necessary natural oils from our skin’s reserves. In doing so, the skin’s oils are taken away, causing the body to reproduce more oil to replenish what’s missing. This tends to create a vicious cycle: the body replenishes the oils – we are told to remove the excess – the body reproduces the oils – we remove them again – etc.
Hydration – Are you drinking 2 litres of water a day to keep your body replenished?
Time – Do you have unrealistic expectations and are you wanting everything to go away quickly?

How to help and manage these:

Maintaining a well-balanced diet where there is a lot of healthy varieties & colours is a great way to keep your body functioning at all levels. This is particularly important if you are suffering from other ailments like Allergies and Intolerances, Hashimotos, Diabetes & even more serious conditions like Cancer. Whilst some of you can still have your indulgent ‘cheat days’, try to ensure it’s not every day.

Being aware of our body changes and what is happening from the beginning will help with the next phase of life. Whether our changes are monthly related, hormonal or the commencement of the pre-menopausal stage, our bodies will begin to adjust.
Seeking out others who have already been on that route is also a great idea – why suffer when learning from someone else’s journey can save you the hassle?

Try to de-stress and unwind to allow our minds to calm down, giving our bodies a chance to rebalance. Some love to do Yoga, Pilates, spa treatments, massage, running, hiking or just getting some rest. Whatever activity you choose to do, keep a journal nearby where you can write what’s bothering you as part of the de-stress process. </p/>

The right skincare routine is also necessary, and when you find what works for you, stick to it. Unless your body and skin tell you it’s time for a change. Start with a gentle cleansing routine, removing your makeup, washing your face and neck. Then apply a concentrated serum if you have one, or a gentle face balm to help replenish your skin. Your skin should feel soft, especially the next morning when you run the ‘back of your hand’ over your face. I still love doing this today!!!

Please keep in mind that if you have had skin problems for a longer period of time, the overnight factor will need a longer period of time to see the results.

Water is the source of life – The reality is that water is a daily necessity, as it helps our bodies get rid of toxins, helps replenish our cells, as well as keep us hydrated from within.
Remember, whilst your skincare keeps your skin moisturised, the water intake from within keeps it hydrated.

Turn back time – We all want the fairy godmother to wave her wand and make all our problems go away overnight. I know what that feels like first hand, waking up every morning to inspect how good or bad my skin looked. The reality is that if you have had a long-term skin condition, it will need time to repair, recover, and to give you that glow back.

Some of you are still shocked when I explain what my skin used to look like as a teenager, covered from face to thighs in weeping and bleeding Eczema. I have no photos of that time in my life, where I saw myself as hideous, so I kept myself indoors for 2 months, away from life.To get well, I had to do things the hard way, seeking help to get my life back on track.

I had to eliminate so many foods and drinks from my diet, to clear my body of years of toxins, caused by medicine, antibiotics, and foods.
All I wanted to be a whole lot of ‘normal’.
It didn’t happen overnight, but with persistence, patience, encouragement, goodwill, strength, a positive attitude together with love and support, I got through to the other side. This is what I always try to reassure you with – it will happen, though be kind to yourself with diligence and managing your expectations.

What I have loved the most about sharing on the blogs and helping others with their skincare routines is the ‘Feedback, Reviews & Testimonials. These are Your words expressing how you feel about Your skin and the products you have been using. These Testimonials are helping others feel encouraged as they read about your experiences and giving them the hope they need to try it out too. For that I can only say ‘Thank you for sharing’. Some of you have been featured at the beginning of the Testimonials page, which is awesome. If you wish to be included, please send me a picture of yourself, preferably without makeup, and a blurb about your version of happiness.

I have also been going to various locations to meet you in person. This has been a wonderful way of connecting and talking about how to find solutions. I recently went to Thalwil (Canton Zurich), Basel, and this week I will be in Zug. You can order your products beforehand, and I will personally deliver them to you at Meetup Location. Try to come along even if it’s for a short stop to say hello.

We have also commenced a Photo Gallery of where Essentially Lili Products have been. As a family, we took a few road trips with my display jars to take pictures around Switzerland.
I have finally set up the Photo Gallery for fun on the webpage. I would love for you to take pics of yourself with an iconic feature where you live with your products and send these to me so that these can be added to the Photo Gallery. We’d love to add other global locations to the gallery too. Thank you in advance for being part of this journey.

Fusion of Essential Oils

Fusion of Essential Oils

Fusion of Essential Oils

That uplifted & take you
on a sensory journey to another location!

I love to experiment with the Essential Oils I have, but don’t use enough. We often hear a lot about ingredients like Lavender and Frankincense, but not necessarily others like Lemongrass or Jasmine.

Whilst making my customer’s products, I decided to make myself something new using Grapefruit White, Lemongrass and Jasmine. The Vegetable Oils selected also keep the skin hydrated, are rich in Vitamins and help conditions like varicose veins. I called it Jazz Body Butter but this could change depending on the vote from my customers.

Mine and my husband’s instant reaction was that it has an Asian fusion that smelt a lot like yummy Thai food.   He was worried about this new product being the replacement of his other favourite Mint Body Butter.  He loves how it smells like Aero Bar and using the product feels like smothering yourself in chocolate. The best part of using these body butter is that it melts onto the skin as soon as it’s in contact with your skin.

The benefits of using the Body Butters is that they contain Vegetable Oils that are rich in vitamins
A, B, C, E and Omega 6 Fatty Acids and Lecithin.
Wouldn’t you love to use a body butter that helps your skin repair as well as keep it nourished? The ingredients chosen for the 2 body butters also help with Varicose Veins which is a bonus.

I also decided to change the blend of the Hemp Hands.  It was originally made with Vanilla and Macadamia, which sounds delish like an ice-cream combo. But I wasn’t sure it was the right blend for this product.  What I love is asking my Customers what they think and what they would like to have in their products.  And just like that – out went Vanilla and Macadamia whilst n came Rose, Palmarosa and Rosemary to make the Rosey Hemp Hands products.

For Kids, I made the Natural Baby Moisturising Oil which has a gentle combination including Lavender which can be applied from face to feet. The ingredients are chosen help nourish the skin as also have the antiseptic properties for cuts and rashes they may have to overcome. The other product I have for Newborn babies is the Happy Babies Hydrosol which is made using Aloe Vera and floral Hydrolats. This product helps soothe and calm skin issues like baby rashes which are common during their early years.

Sometimes, all-natural products behave according to the weather: When it’s super cold, they can become hard, solid and difficult to apply; When it’s very hot, they can become soft and often runny. But being resourceful, we just need to think outside the box when trying to apply these!

Clean hands is a must for applying our products!Using your thumbnail to remove the balms is the other suggestion as it’s the best way to apply any of the Essentially Lili all-natural skincare products to your face, hands, feet and body!Your thumbnail allows you to apply throughout the day without needing to carry around a spatula!!

When I’m travelling in the summertime, I have found my products can become super soft from the heat. o if you are travelling by plane, keep your Essentially Lili products with your checked in luggage as it will remain cooler in the hold. I usually keep my sample pots in my carry-on luggage as it’s small enough to reapply during the flight and prevent my skin from dehydrating. When I arrive at the destination, I put my jars and sample pots into the fridge at the hotel/apartment/resort. Not only will the products re-set, but they will be lovely and cool when you need to reapply after being out in the sun all day.

When the weather is too cold, they can become solid and hard. The solution for the kid’s product is to run the bottom of the jar under warm running water to soften the Cocoa Butter and then give it a good shake. Sometimes, the product clogs the inner tube – so I suggest that you remove it, rinse it out, dry it and then re-insert it.

The best thing about all-natural products are that whilst I am making them fresh, they will not be tainted with other chemical or synthetic ingredients. Unlike commercially made products that are made to squeeze out with the same consistency, all-natural products that are untainted do what they should do ‘ naturally’.So when you receive your products, they will hopefully arrive quickly and without being stuck under a heater in the Post-Person’s delivery van which can make them look like a tsunami!

But if they do, just remember you can put your products in the fridge to re-set them!

  • If you had to choose between Peppermint and Lemongrass, which would you prefer?
